1) Nothing like a Disney bundle price increase right on the heels of the Jimmy Kimmel fiasco. I wonder if they held off on the announcement until 24 hours after saying he'd return?

2) Having just watched the latest Death in Paradise spinoff, it struck me as curious that a successful show like Silent Witness has not done the same (though maybe it has? Anyone know?)

In a way though, it's like the show has had various spinoffs within the same show. Read more... )

I also thought about this issue given this article which argues that technology will continue to make the cost of content creation fall to where practically anyone can create marketable content, especially since consumer expectation of what counts as entertainment and information has changed due to cost and access issues as well as demographic changes. As a result, companies that invest heavily in it will expect to get paid in different ways. Read more... )

3) It's fun to see how many people over time at Board Game Arena have recognized my Merlin icon. It's a little fannish high five.

4) Sister Boniface's episode of Doctor Who struck me as a sign of changing times. Twenty years ago the fan would have been the geekiest cast member, probably the reporter, but here various cast members are fans and it's mainly the tall, matinee idol detective.

5) Interesting to see how U.S. films are getting less viewing overseas, mainly due to China's restrictions on how many can be shown there. I thought this bit was interesting as well: "The the top French films released were all English-language movies co-produced with the UK among other countries, and did more business in the UK than in the US or China." I didn't realize France even made films in English.

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

kinda tickled the dayjob photo team has contacted me no less than four times over the last 24 hours to ask how i did such-and-such photoshop trick......

(that's after i had fun nerding out and explaining to my minion team the very basic mathematical concepts to common photoshop filters like multiply/overlay plus some rudimentary light bounce physics learned from game rendering engines)

(... i might be a nerd lol.)

i've been thinking about different kinds of literacy.

financial, technology literacy mostly.

this all got started because i'm signing a lot of legal papers lately - and without getting into it there was one that had a slight bit of text missing on one that  drastically changed the amount of rights i had and i very thankfully caught it on a reread and was obnoxious about getting it fixed despite comments of 'no they should be the same.... oh shit. they're not'. i do truly think it was accidental, but recently playing through the whole pelleas-accidentally-signed-the-blood-contract side plot in radiant dawn only a few weeks later sure had a new flavor there lol.

and....  god the freedom that tech literacy alone can give you is insane.  it's allowed me to live in multiple worlds of a kind for decades in peace in ways i don't think anyone else fully understands - to seamlessly slip between those despite being housebound. to have total intellectual independence in evesdropping politely in different circles, to wander around and learn and sympathize with a far wider slice of humanity than otherwise. all because "i'm good with technology", on a pretty average-to-me level; it's not like i'm a sysadmin. additionally - despite the recent NSFW/kink art crackdowns, i've been able to operate mostly unaffected from an infrastructure level because i've already anticipated and built it smartly like my site (complete with rss blog and the like), giving me the runway to continue to build and draw at my own pace.

contrast this with a certian flavor of social media personas where it's very clear they don't have the willpower or desire to even learn how to do that; and how then, they're effectively stuck to the arbitrary rules of whatever platform they're on.

many, many types of coercion exists and will always exist, but having just a basic level of that literacy protects you from so much of it.

I have been counting To Let signs

This city of closed doors and bolted locks, shuttered windows, sleeping eyes without intent; this metropolis of empty shops, whose doorways bristle with second-hand tents, where showroom-perfect flats devoid of life collect no rents; where a few thousand scrape sleep from the paving slabs each night and stuff it daily into public lavs alongside their gut parasites;

This unfortressed home of cut-and-paste commerce, repeating like a bad kebab in sixty different orders on every street; gates opened to migrating labour and attracting only far-right 'saviours' with bricks in hand, drifting within out sour and hate-filled island nation; our withering home, our post-midnight disintegration.

Our diplomatic crows and uneducated pigeons prowl the parks in search of crumbs denied to John and Abdul on the main road, their cups empty, their lungs full.

Here I will not be buried; here they will disregard my every dying wish, fling me to the plagueless pit, the bonfire of the trannies, in a smoke screen of tyranny.

But what better ending?

To fade out, in the parade of coughing shades haunting the Strand; to stumble cocaine-fast into the open-sewer Thames, silted up with the ever-increasing greed of navy-blue men; or perish, hard-hearted, from the arteroschlerosis of indifference, my money-gilded foot pressed to the throat of the city?

No thanks; give me two tides upside-down by the riverbank, and I'll retire.
